What's the difference between Pale Ale and IPA: A Craft Beer Guide

Here at Alphabet Brewing Company, we're super passionate about craft beer and all that the industry embodies. It's an industry that allows us to explore so many different styles and types of beer, but the two most popular styles in our line-up are Pale Ale and IPA (India Pale Ale). Here's a breakdown of their key differences between these stalwarts of the beer world.
Pale Ale
Pale Ale is a versatile and widely enjoyed beer known for its balanced flavour profile. Typically, it features:
  • Moderate Alcohol Content: Generally ranging from 4-6% ABV.
  • Balanced Hop and Malt: A harmonious blend where neither hops nor malt dominate.
  • Flavour Notes: Mild to moderate hop bitterness with hints of floral, citrus, and fruity notes, complemented by a subtle malt sweetness.
IPA
IPA, or India Pale Ale, is a bolder, hoppier cousin of the Pale Ale, with distinctive characteristics:
  • Higher Alcohol Content: Usually between 5-7.5% ABV, though some can go higher.
  • Prominent Hop Character: Strong hop bitterness and aroma, often with flavors of pine, resin, citrus, and tropical fruits.
  • Varied Styles: Includes sub-styles like West Coast IPA, known for its clear, crisp bitterness, and New England IPA, noted for its hazy appearance and juicy, fruit-forward profile.
We have our own takes on these beer styles. For instance, our "Juice Springsteen" Pale Ale showcases the balanced approach of a a true pale ale, while the "A to the K" West Coast IPA delivers a robust, hoppy punch.
